"The Gates" in New York
Are "The Gates" in New York’s Central
Park tugging at your heart and spirit? They are a bright
and beautiful respite from the cold and barren winter landscape.
The artists, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, say that "The
Gates" have no meaning or purpose other than to create
beauty and to invite people to enjoy the artistic experience.
The exhibit is made up of steel gates with billowing saffron
fabric repeated over and over and over. The gates vary only
to flow with and to honor the natural terrain and to lead
people to places in the park they may never have ventured
before.
How can such gates appearing so effortlessly and simply
be so moving and memorable? They are an unexpected short
period of riotous color and joy creating lasting memories.
Is there art that can’t adequately described and must
actually be experienced to know?
There are voices saying that it is essential that we quantify
and articulate the meaning of coaching in order for us to
brand it and make it viable in the marketplace. I know that
may be an economic necessity. But maybe the artists know
something about both art and marketing – that there
is something mystical and magical about being a part of
the beauty and mystery of art that is memorable. And maybe
coaching at its best is really inexplicable – kind
of like wandering through saffron gates in the middle of
winter.
