Futalafu Challenge
Have you conquered a big river lately? Barbara Pagano
told a wonderful story of courage and triumph in her presentation
at a Leadership Conference recently.
Barbara along with a group of women who were all well over fifty paddled a
raft through the rapids on the Futalafu River in Chili,
one of the wildest rivers in the world. On the third day
of exposure to the wind and water, sleeping cold on sand
bars at night, and daily physical challenges, they were
all near exhaustion. That is when Matt, the river guide,
had them pull the raft over to the bank.
As they all sat listening, Matt said, “I know you
are tired and cold and think you have nothing left to give.
But around the next bend, we will be entering the Terminator,
the toughest rapid on the river. I can’t do this rapid
alone! I need for you to dig down inside yourself and paddle
harder than you have ever paddled before so they we can
all come safely through this rapid. We are all counting
on YOU.”
The women sat silently gathering up all their remaining
strength and courage. As they focused on the river and the
challenge, they entered the Terminator with bravery and
determination. The celebrated their triumph at the end of
the day with renewed confidence and exhilaration..
