QUOTE
We are primed to think that talent is the key to success. But what counts even more is a fusion of passion and perseverance. In a world of instant gratification, GRIT may yield the biggest payoff of all.

Passion, Persistence and Courage = GRIT

The latest buzz in psychological studies shows that intelligence and talent may not be the key factor in extraordinary achievement. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania interviewed high achievers in various fields and found the key that distinguished them from others was Grit, “the ability to reach a long-term goal despite the inevitable obstacles.”

The research shows that great achievers like Jonas Salk or Lance Armstrong have more than determination, they have a passion to persist and the courage to take risks.

I realized in reading the article that I grew up with a great model for Grit. Divorced with two small children and only a high school education, my mother accomplished remarkable goals with true grit. She worked and graduated from college, then received a master’s degree and almost a Ph.D. She was the principal of an elementary school for many years and her alliance with a major industrial company led to the creation of the first outdoor classroom for studying environmental sciences in the state of Arkansas. She had a passion for educating children.

I am amazed that as she worked steadily toward her goals, she never lost site of her role as our mother. She studied after we were in bed at night, cooked great meals, and was always available to take us to our school and sporting events. She focused her energy on her priorities.

The exciting thing about the new research on grit confirms that it isn’t a clenched teeth view of grit that works. It is that internal motivation that creates the energy that renews itself in the passion to achieve something extraordinary. It can be developed and grown when you have a vision or big goal to focus on every day and persist to accomplish what seems impossible to others.
