Out of the Way of Your Message
My father traveled around Arkansas for many years as the
state economist giving Estate Planning workshops for farmers
and their families. I attended a couple of these workshops
and was amazed at how relaxed and natural he was in front
of the audience. I asked him his secret!
He laughed and said he made sure his suit was pressed,
his notes were prepared and that he didn’t have spinach
in his teeth. Then he gave me the real secret! He told me
that not one person in the audience was coming to hear him
speak. Dad knew the audience was coming because they needed
to know how they could preserve their family farms.
Because he recognized he was only the conduit between the
audience and a powerful message, he was able to show up
without any ego and confidently speak and interact with
the audience.
Getting out of the way of his message was a powerful life
lesson for me.
