"I think the one lesson I have learned is that there is no substitute for paying attention” ~ Diane Sawyer It was a clear, crisp spring afternoon several years ago when our younger daughter, 16-year-old Ginny, finished playing in her first state tennis tournament. She had played into the semi-finals, and we were excited and pleased with her improved tennis and the fun she had had. She was still pumped with energy, and I was exhausted after a busy week and then a hectic tennis weekend. When she asked to drive, I said yes immediately. I gave her the map and assured her that all she needed to do was stay on Hwy 286 all the way home! I climbed into the back of our van and went fast asleep. I awoke startled hearing Ginny call, “Mom, Mom, which highway do I take- 9 or 26? I sat up and looked out the window to see beautiful pine country not the flat, lush delta where we lived. I said, “Ginny, what happened to Highway 286.” She said, “ I don’t know Mom, but I have been making GREAT time.” I NOW love this story! It is one of those stories that will live on and on in our family. It is also an important life lesson for me because with all my energy and interests I sometimes realize that I am making GREAT time moving away from where I want to end up. It gives me a chance to laugh and get back on course quickly. Coaching Tip: 1.
Are you clear on where you want to go and how to get there? It is amazing what you can accomplish if you start each day with the question: What can I do today to get to where I really want to end up?
