“The only competition worthy a wise man is with himself." A Lack of Comparison In the mountains of North Carolina, Chief watched as campers competed to see who was the best sailor, rider, paddler, or swimmer. At the end of the competition, there were four winners and over a hundred disappointed kids. From that moment, the owner of camp Mondamin knew there must be a better way. He decided that every child could be a winner by competing only with himself (herself). In the process Chief discovered that people, and especially children, are more likely to try new things and embark on great adventures when they aren’t being compared with others. The camp became a model of cooperation and teamwork where the goal was to accomplish extraordinary things- a difficult climb or a challenging river- by working together. In that model, a little boy who struggled in school with dyslexia came to Mondamin and learned to set goals and achieve them with the help of counselors and fellow campers. In the process, he found his heart and his confidence. In that environment, our son learned to be a champion.
