“Sometimes pain can be a powerful catalyst for change.” Catalyst for Change John Elway, the winningest quarterback in the NFL, retired in 1999 from the Denver Broncos with his second super bowl ring on his hand and fame, glory, and riches all around. Rick Reilly writes in this week’s Sports Illustrated about what has happened to Elway in the three years since he left football. He says, “somebody ran off with John Elway’s happily ever after.” In these three years, his father, who was his best friend, died, most of his business ventures failed, his wife left and took their four children, and four weeks ago his twin sister died. Elway was quoted in the article, “Suddenly all the people who were going to show up at my induction into the NFL Hall of Fame could fit in a phone booth.” He said when his family left, it was “like a two-by-four in his heart.” So, he is hanging out with his kids and driving them to school. He also began studying and working on his own personal growth even sounding 'Zen-like’according to Reilly. Janet, his wife, says you would hardly recognize Elway today. He sent her flowers each week she was gone, and went over to the house she was renting to weed her garden while she was out. She said she couldn’t believe he is going to the mall shopping with her. His family is back home now, and he is talking more about love and contentment than he is about football and winning. Sometimes pain can be a powerful catalyst for change. Remember there is a hierarchy of choices before a concern becomes a crisis. Waiting for a crisis can create severe pain. First there is a concern. That concern becomes a problem. That problem becomes a worry. (As in keeping you awake at night) Then that worry becomes a crisis. Have you taken inventory of your life lately? Are there concerns and problems that you can handle now before they escalate into a crisis. If you need a life transformation reach out and use all your resources, including a coach. The longer you put off making positive changes the more likely you are to experience pain. Coaching
