Can you imagine a computer that not only makes mistakes but also knows how to fix them? Dr. Gerald Edleman, Nobel Prize winner in medicine, says that typically when computers make mistakes they crash. This newtechnology will make computers think more like humans and will help us learn to recover from our mistakes more quickly and effectively.
Edleman’s Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, California is a research center that is responsible for this new research and many such innovative projects. Edleman brought together a small group of young, brilliant scientists and invited them to a breathtakingly beautiful setting with an almost monastic environment. The institute is not affiliated with any academic or industrial institutions, so there are few constraints and little pressure on what they research or how quickly they produce. With private funding, they are free to go for “high-risk” and “high reward” research.

and the frequent group energy, support, and collaborations! He said
lunch is full of ‘horsing around’ and laughter. This community
group fills the spirit and maximizes each individual’s creative
potential. I loved it when a reporter asked Edleman if the young scientists
at the center agreed with his theories on the brain, he answered very
quickly, “I hope not.” Freedom, beauty, brilliance and the
power of a group are producing extraordinary results.

The Neurosciences Institute was established in 1981 by Nobel Laureate
Gerald M. Edelman, M.D., Ph.D., the current director. The Institute
is unique in that it is supported entirely by private donations, intentionally
small, group-oriented, interdisciplinary; and engaged in both theoretical
and experimental neurobiology. Institute scientists have been responsible
for many important discoveries involving consciousness, sleep, perception,
music, memory, movement, behavior, and speech.
