Issue 77 Quote American Basin in the top of the Rockies bursts into riotous color for a brief two weeks in the middle of July each summer. We love to meander up the long jeep road to the top of the basin in anticipation of the wonder and beauty. There is a waterfall in the basin that doesn't take a precipitous drop, it simply flows from a glacier in the tundra and rushes the icy blue and white water down the mountain. I love the adventure of hiking at 12,500 feet along the rocky, slippery trail. Last year I met a Ptarmigan and her chicks who scampered unafraid under my feet, and I laughed at the furry, fat marmots sunning on the big flat rocks. There is a long, rocky ledge nestled in just under the top of the falls. Very slowly and carefully, I like to ease down on that ledge and dangle my boots over its edge and watch and feel the water cascade in every direction around me. I look down and see the fields of flowers below the falls that the water nourishes. I know this water is heading all the way to the ocean, and I am thrilled to be here at the beginning point of that journey. I sit there until I am sure I remember each rock, each turn, each spray, and each moment with my waterfall because I want to take its nourishment with me .It takes some careful climbin' and some serious sittin', to memorize a waterfall. ~o^o~ Resources
