Issue 79 Quote "The reality of life is that your perceptions -- right or wrong
-- influence everything else you do." Sometimes we need to change what we see on the inside. Cory Booker was featured in a U. S. News article honoring new leaders in America. He played football at Stanford and received a B.A and M.A. in the process. From there he went to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and then returned to graduate from Yale Law School. Despite offers from top law and business firms, he decided he wanted to go into public service. He took up residence on the top floor of Brick Towers a public housing project where he still lives today as he runs for Mayor of Newark, NJ Cory needed support so he met with Virginia Jones, the 74 years old woman
who was the tenant president of Brick Towers and had lost her son in a
shooting in the building. She replied, "Boy, you need to understand that what you see outside of you is a reflection of what you see inside of you, and if you're one of those people who sees only problems, darkness and despair, then that's all there is ever going to be. But if you are one of those people who sees hope, opportunity, and love, then you can be someone who makes a difference." It was in that moment that he had a shift in perspective and became a force for effective change.
